Almost New Orleans-Bound!

This is where I will find myself in less than a week! I’ve never been to New Orleans before and am so unbelievably excited about my weekend in the French Quarter with some of my old college roommates. However, it means that this next week is going to be chaos: I’ve got an article to write for Tahoe Quarterly, a newsletter to send out for Star Resort Group and some tweaks to make to a website that I’m working on with the very talented April Marriner. On top of that, I want to get some instructions and meals put together to make Jason and Nora’s first ever daddy/daughter weekend a little easier, and spend as much time as possible doing fun things with Nora—I have a feeling that being away from her for three nights will be much harder on me than it will be for her!

Memorial Day Weekend Snowstorm

20120526-174806.jpg
Typical Sierra spring: Two days ago, it was sunny skies and beautiful. Friday morning, I woke up to snow. It was so cloudy that you couldn’t even see Mt. Rose most of the day (as evidenced by the photo). We may not be barbecuing this weekend, but I predict spending a lot of time in bed with my laptop, hopefully making progress on some writing. Gotta love silver linings!

Tahoe Blues

Early copies of Tahoe Blue are in and I hear it looks fabulous! I couldn’t make an event last week at South Lake Tahoe’s Bona Fide Books, so unfortunately missed picking up my copy early. However, there’s going to be an event in Reno on June 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Sundance Books. I will definitely be in attendance and you should be too! If you can’t make the event, feel free to pre-order the book (official release date is June 8) from Bona Fide here.

TQ Best of Tahoe 2012

I was in Truckee last week so I stopped by the Tahoe Quarterly offices and picked up the Best of Tahoe issue. As always, beautiful photography and great articles! I’ve got a couple of bylines in the issue: I wrote a piece about the Squaw Valley Institute, which is a very cool speaker series that occurs monthly, another story about some of the best museums and cultural sites around Reno/Tahoe (to include stops ranging from South Lake Tahoe’s Explore Tahoe to Reno’s National Automobile Museum and Children’s Discovery Museum) and lastly, a small piece for the Arts Department about UNR’s Peter Goin, a photography and videographer who specializes in the Nevada landscape. Grab a copy on stands or subscribe here!

Interview with Dave Russo

Just got off the phone with artist Dave Russo for a story I’m writing for the Summer issue of TQ. What a fascinating man! He won a scholarship in 1947 and, for his prize, chose to study with Picasso for a year in Paris. Picasso’s first response was that he didn’t take students but, after a friend interceded and Picasso learned that he’d get $2,000 a month for supplying the young Russo with room and board, the artist changed his mind. Dave has some really incredible stories about his experiences with the master, whom he refers to as the “uncrowned king of France,” including dinners with Matisse and, as a young Catholic boy, being forced to draw a very pregnant, very nude and very hairy model. The issue will be out in July with the complete story!

TQ Mountain Home Issue

I am sadly overdue on my updates! In my defense, I’ve been traveling, working, writing and found out a few months ago that I’m pregnant with baby #2. All of that, combined with a rambunctious toddler, makes my free time fairly nonexistent. However, I’m done slacking! Anyway, as I’m currently working on my articles for the Summer issue of TQ, I wanted to make sure that I updated with the Mountain Home Awards, which came out a month ago and is always my favorite of the TQ issues. As always, the photography is gorgeous (please check out the glass home featured on the cover!) and I am inspired to remodel. I wrote three of the Home Awards pieces, all of which feature really incredible homes. The most unusual is the Ward-Young home in Martis Camp, which boasts a curving roof line, exotic materials and a very funky theater room.

Back from Hawaii!

Me, Nora and our sea turtle friend

It appears the vacation is definitely over! Last week, I was going for my last walk on a sun-drenched beach in Hawaii; today, I am huddled indoors trying to avoid the wrath of the biggest storm we’ve seen this winter. Being housebound is definitely not a bad thing though: While Nora sleeps, I’m finally getting a chance to catch up on old invoices and looking toward future projects. My biggest to-do item is to get started on my novel again—I let it sit just a little too long and now have no idea where it is going. Well, time for some hot chocolate and to hopefully find some inspiration!

TQ Winter 2011-12

I’ve been pretty busy the past few weeks and not great with updates: The Washoe fire ended up coming much too close for comfort, so we evacuated up to Incline Village. However, between smoke inhalation and anxiety, I ended up in the ER and was pretty sick for about a week. Since then, I’ve had a couple of projects going on with the house (I could not live with the brown bathroom any longer), am trying to get back into Bikram yoga and have spent an inordinate amount of time reading and rereading Elmo’s Animal Alphabet to Nora. I did not expect my reading material to change so much with parenthood!

Anyway, I finally got my copy of the Winter 2011-12 Tahoe Quarterly! This is the first issue that I haven’t worked on and it was surprising pleasurable to enjoy the articles as a reader and not as an editor (although, who am I kidding, I can’t read a cereal box with a little mental editing!). I wrote a Valley View piece about the children’s Discovery Museum that opened in downtown Reno (and Nora’s got a cameo appearance in the story) and a Well-Being piece about the new Cancer Center that is opening in Truckee in the coming months. There are some interesting reads, including a piece about the Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows merger, one about the High Fives Foundation and another about the Woodward camp opening at Boreal (which I used to attend in Pennsylvania for gymnastics). And of course, always gorgeous photography, so grab a copy if you get the chance.

Washoe Valley Fire

Well, not really something to brag about, but my picture of the Washoe Valley Fire taken from my porch on January 19 is on the RGJ website, available here. Here’s hoping that the rain and snow we’ve been promised comes through quickly and extinguishes this before it can do any more damage!

The Poe Manual

Well, it would appear that my short story, The Poe Manual, did not win anything in the Writers’ Digest competition. Regardless, it was a fun way to get me writing and to finish a story that would have most likely sat untouched otherwise. Working within the 4,000 word count was really challenging, but also really great for making every word count. Click below to read the story.
